Known locally as 'The Old Bell Chapel', the church was built in 1612 on the site of two earlier chapels. The picture shows three dated foundation stones set into the building's one remaining wall. By 1872 the church had fallen into disrepair and was replaced by the new Church of St. James just across Thornton Road. Patrick Brontë was minister here from 1815 to 1820 and his children Charlotte, Patrick Branwell, Emily Jane and Anne were all born in his nearby home at 74 Market Street, Thornton during that time.
