This commemorative stone marks the spot where Roland Vicary Gibbs came off his horse whilst riding. The son of Henry and Emily Gibbs of the Tyntesfield estate was killed at the age of 22. His grandfather, William Gibbs, founded the estate with the proceeds from his highly lucrative guano business. Roland was the fourth of nine children and was to die early along with a sister (Matilda Blanche, aged 2 months) and a brother (Lieut. Noel Martin who died in the Great War in Africa).
