The memorial was commissioned by Buckie Town Council in 1921, designed by John Kinross (1855-1931), sculpted by William Birnie Rhind (1853-1933) and erected in the middle of Cluny Square, where it was unveiled in 1925. It was later moved to this site in the north-west quadrant of the Square, because it was thought that it was a traffic hazard.
