In 1875, Scarborough's original gas works on Quay Street were replaced by a new rail served gasworks off Seamer Road and alongside the Scarborough to York railway line. In order to gain road access to the gasworks, a new road, now called Old Gasworks Lane had to be built off Seamer Road and under the railway line through a new bridge with restricted headroom. The bridge carrying the railway makes use of slender cast iron beams. The compound to the left of the white and blue van is the site a Scarborough's third engine shed of about 1890. In the background the slopes of Olivers Mount where the site of a quarry can be seen.
