Following the expansion of the hamlet due to the arrival of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the original St Anne's church was consecrated on October 13th 1831, built of plain red sandstone on the site of an iron foundry and adjacent to the cattlemarket. The present church was consecrated in 1890. The architects were Aldrich & Deacon.
