Hard to believe, but in the middle of the 19th century this was a busy industrial site. The Slamannan and Borrowstounness branch of the Monklands Railways ran where the wood at the far side is, and the sea - or rather the estuarine mudflats - were just on the other side of the railway. The iron works have gone, the railway is now the Bo'ness and Kinneil preserved railway, and many acres of mudflat have been filled in, some of it now designated a nature reserve.
