This was The Old Red Lion pub. Way back Abbey Street was a turnpike road. When the first stage coach service ran through here in 1815 from Manchester to Clitheroe, it was a popular coaching inn. It was also the setting for meetings of the Anti-Corn Law League. The Chartist leader Fergus O'Connor stayed here before addressing a public meeting in 1842 ,the year Chartist riots and strikes erupted in the industrial north. It's on the corner of Abbey Street and Black Abbey Street. Black Abbey Street is so called because monks with black robes once had a farm in the area.
