The memorial is located near the main entrance to the cemetery from Bassaleg Road. The Studt family, of central European origin, ran fairgrounds throughout South Wales and the West Country for many years. In 1897 Jacob Studt gave a week's income to the New Hospital Fund in return for Lord Tredegar allowing him to use an open space in Alexandra Road Newport for his fair.
