Bentham House, Bentham Lane, Purton Stoke

Grade II Listed stone-tiled Cotswold limestone house, built circa 1850-52 in vigorous early Victorian Gothic style for William James Sadler on land belonging to the Shaftesbury Estate. http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-317920-bentham-house-purton- It has two storeys and attics, and four-bays to the front. The entrance is through a two-storey gabled porch in the second bay. This has a moulded arch with hood and a canted oriel over it with pointed transomed lights. The first and fourth bays also two storey canted bays with blind quatrefoils in spandrils and pierced parapets. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed. There are also large dormers to bays 1, 3 and 4, all gabled with carved bargeboards. To the left, a single storey 2-bay billiards room was added circa 1898.
