Taken from the car park on the site of the old alum works. Alum was central to Sandsend's economy for 250 years. Human urine was an essential ingredient and was shipped here from London. The station was opened in 1883 and closed, pre - Beeching, in 1958. There were no freight facilities at the station other than a single siding to some coal drops, which in later years was used for three camping coaches. Sandsend's freight facilities were a little way down the line at East Row.
