Built in 1863 to replace an earlier Elizabethan house which burnt down in the 1830's. The building is now used as a conference centre but has many historic links. Charles I was briefly imprisoned here in 1647. Gladstone and Disraeli both visited the house. It was used to house captured German U boat crews and airmen during WWII.
