The building behind the memorial is on the site of the former headquarters of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU). The TGWU was part of the TUC, which was first established in Salford in 1868 in the Three Crowns pub in King Street. The Art Deco headquarters stood on this site until 2003, when the building was demolished and replaced with these modern luxury apartments, opened in 2005.
