Ebony

The Ordnance Survey knew about Ebony in 1877 when they marked it big on their 6 inch map. But at some stage since then it has dropped out of their gazetteer. The name describes an area which is a northerly outlier of the Isle of Oxney http://www.villagenet.co.uk/rotherlevels/villages/readingstreet.php . It still survives in the name of the civil parish Stone-cum-Ebony http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone-cum-Ebony . On the right of this image is a cottage opposite Hayes Farm. The low evening sun is picking out some very interesting depressions in the field which might be worth archaeological investigation.
