Old pit by the A153 between Dovendale and Maltby

The local countryside is pock-marked with old pits and quarries, this would have been a chalk pit. They deserve a mention, for they must have made the area self sufficient in building materials for many centuries. However, usually as far as photos are concerned, they are "the pits": they make for dark, depressing pictures, literally of the bottom of a hole, usually with its quota of rubbish chucked in in a vain attempt at infill. This pit, however, is quite scenic.
