The small blue sign attached to the lamp post indicates the route of the Coast to Coast (or C2C) cycle route which crosses the North of England. There are two branches, one starting from Tynemouth, the other from Sunderland. These join at Consett to cross the North Pennines then the route splits again, one branch heading to Workington while the other finishes at Whitehaven, both on the coast of Cumbria.
