The pumps, having conveyed the foul water, manhole to manhole, all the way down West Street, to the southern end of Hambledon village near Lotts general stores, finally discharge it into a stream. It is first discharged into the rusty-looking skip seen here, which presumably has some kind of grating to filter out large objects. Thence directly into the stream. The nortmal sewer continues southwards to a pumping station at Bury Lodge Farm, but the pipe capacity would not have been sufficient to carry the additional flow brought by the pumps.
