The former Cottingham Drain was constructed consequential of the 'Act for dividing, enclosing, and draining, certain Lands, Grounds, and Common Pastures, in the Parish of Cottingham, in the East Riding of the County of York' 1766. The drain discharged into the river Hull via a sluice immediately north of the mill in Wincolmlee adjacent to the Scott Street bridge. Although the drain was infilled in the 1960s, the sluice is still very much in evidence today.
