In 1920 Anglo-American introduced the first, hand-operated, petrol pumps with underground storage tanks of 300- to 500-gallon capacity. Tax on petrol was introduced in 1928 and stimulated price competition in the petrol market followed shortly after by price maintenance agreements between the national companies. The outbreak of war in 1939 stopped the price fixing that never returned. Petrol rationing ended in April 1950. In 1964 about 38,500 petrol stations existed, about 4,000 of which were one-pump sites. As far as I can tell, Roberts Petroleum Limited (RP) was registered on 30 June 1966 with its registered office in Staines. Roberts Petroleum was acquired by Q8 the trading name of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation that was founded on 27 January 1980. Q8 made many acquisitions in the 1983/4 period, RP probably being one of them. It seems likely therefore that the pumps date from the second half of the 1960s as they also show the hallmarks of the 1960s designs.
