The pub’s name was derived from the crest of the local landowner, the Yarney family. Amongst the artefacts discovered here on the occasion of a dig carried out by the Channel 4 TV "Time Team" in July 2011 was a drinking spout dating from the 17th or 18th century - a piece of pub archaeology from the times of King Henry VIII or Queen Elizabeth I. Update - the pub has closed and is up for auction in mid-September 2018.
