The hotel's name reflects the time in the 19th century when Ripon had hopes of becoming a rival to nearby Harrogate as a pump room was opened with sulphur water being piped from a spring at Aldfield to the west of Fountains Abbey. The spa was short lived, but the name remains with the hotel. My 1955 AA handbook lists bed and breakfast from 25/- [£1.25] and lunch from 6/- [30p]. One suspects that prices may have risen since then.
