In the middle of a landscape of almost heroic ugliness - sewage works, industrial estates, pylon lines, logistics depots - these little cottages along the side of an apparently ancient right of way hang on as virtually the only human habitation. To the left of the photo, a stack of shipping containers; at the end of the road, Sutton council's vehicle fleet depot; and off the photo to the right, looming over the cottages, a huge example of "big shed" architecture proclaiming itself to house "Digital Croydon" is guarded by tall fences and deep water.
