Although this public house has been closed for around three years or more, the sign remains. It shows Windsor Castle and probably portraits of King George V and Queen Mary, but it is difficult to be sure as they are not very realistic and show signs of retouching. The Royal Family's family name was changed to Windsor in 1917 at the time of the First World War (1914-18) because of anti-German feeling. Their original name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha showed the family's Germanic origins. As the pub was known as the King of Prussia (then part of what is now Germany) the pub may well have thought it prudent to change their name also. Image
