The former Convent of Mercy, No.144 Southcoates Lane. Rare example of a Roman Catholic convent complete with Gothic Revival chapel in Early English style. Built 1930 for the order of the Sisters of Mercy. The Hull Convent of Mercy was founded in 1857 and originally stood in Anlaby Road. The convent moved to Southcoates Lane in 1931. The order of the Sisters of Mercy was founded in 1831 by Catherine McAuley, who was born into a wealthy Dublin family in 1778. Catherine McAuley was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1990 and her order is now established on every continent. By the mid-1970s, the convent was too large for the reduced numbers, so a decision was taken to convert the building to St Catherine's Home for the Elderly.
