Built as "a retreat and the terminating feature of Beckford's idyllic landscape garden" by the eccentric multi-millionaire William Beckford in 1826-28. He chose as his architect Henry Goodridge, "because he was young and compliant" speculates Pevsner. Grade I listed. The finely-detailed gateway, also by Goodridge, dates from 1848. Grade II* listed.
