Unemployment continues to fall. The media seems to be full of optimistic reports about the end of the recession and expansion in all sectors. Notwithstanding that there are three vacant shops to let in this short stretch of Castle Lane, between Callender Street and Donegall Place (background). The one in the foreground was last seen in Image (March 2012). Going back to the early/mid-1970’s it contained “Sarah’s” – a branch of Inglis with a bakery and a “chips with everything” café upstairs. It was notable because, at the time, the large bakeries didn’t bake on a Sunday night/Monday morning it was still one of the few places in the city centre where it was possible to buy a fresh loaf on a Monday. The café had a rival in Thompsons “Lite Bite” nearby at William Street South. Continue to Image
