Dechreuwyd yr achos ym Mhontlliw yn 1832 yn nhy un John Morris gerllaw Morthwylfa Lliw. Yna, am ddwy flynedd addolid mewn ystordy golosgoed a addaswyd yn arbennig ar eu cyfer. Yn 1835 adeiladodd y 24 aelod y capel cyntaf - adeilad bach syml gyda tho gwellt, llawr pridd a dim oriel. Ailadeiladwyd y capel yn 1851 ac yn sgil cynnydd yn y nifer o aelodau fe'i helaethwyd yn 1884. Un periglor amlwg a fu'n arwain y ddiadell yn ystod y 1940au a'r 50au oedd y Parchedig Rhydwen Williams (1916-1997). Yn nofelydd ac yn fardd o fri fe enillodd y Goron yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol ddwywaith, y naill 1946 a'r llall 1964. Cynhelir cyrddau o hyd yn y capel. The first meeting of the Baptists in Pontlliw was held in 1832 at the home of a certain John Morris near the Lliw Forge. Regular meetings were then held for two years in a converted charcoal store. In 1835 the 24 members that made up the congregation built the first chapel - a simple thatched roof building with an earthen floor and no gallery. Rebuilt in 1851 it was again enlarged in 1884 to accommodate the growing congregation. A notable incumbent at Carmel during the 1940s and 50s was the Reverend Rhydwen Williams (1916-1997). An accomplished novelist and poet he won the prestigious Crown at the National Eisteddfod in 1946 and 1964 respectively. Services continue to be held at the chapel.
