On 9 January 2014 Clerkenwell fire station, the oldest in London, closed its doors, as a result of savage cuts to the fire service, either because of economics or ideology (in a concerted effort shrink the size of the public sector). Clerkenwell is one of 10 fire stations in London to close. The Clerkenwell building will no doubt find a new use as a luxury hotel.
