Signpost near Abbess Roding

This signpost is at the junction of the C road from Abbess Roding, Anchor Lane, to Matching Green, and the C road to White Roothing or White Roding, (which does not appear on the 1940s OS map). Unusually OS maps give both names, though Roothing was used in the 17th century. In the distance in the centre is the thin white spire, and tower of the church of St Edmunds in Abbess Roding which dates largely from the 14th century. Abbess Roding is one of eight parishes formed after the Norman Conquest by the dividing of an area known as Roding or Rodings.
