In days when most people were illiterate, public houses and inns would often be named after easily recognised animals, birds. flowers etc which could be depicted on the sign. So there are many named the Black Horse, or the White Horse and sometimes other colours. This particular black horse appears to be a Shire horse type which would have been a common sight in Victorian times pulling carts around the streets. Image
