Not used for anything now. A ferry service was established between here, the Pier Head and New Ferry (Wirral) in 1865. By 1876 the service had been discontinued. The dock was known as the "Cockle Hole" and was used by small fishing boats rather than larger scale maritime trade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Ferry_Basin
