This Scheduled Monument is the last surviving example of a timber trestle railway viaduct in England. Built as part of the Witham - Maldon branch line in the 1840's, it later became part of the Eastern Counties Railway which was absorbed into the Great Eastern Railway. It remained in use under British Railways until the line was closed in 1966.
