Violet is a Pollit & Wigzell tandem compound engine built in 1886 with slide valves and fitted with this new Corliss valve high pressure cylinder in 1931. The red 'wheel' is the main steam stop valve fitted with an electric stop motion. The slide valve low pressure cylinder is seen to the right. The gauge on the extreme right is the vacuum gauge on the combined jet condenser and air pump assembly.
