Ashton’s historic Market Hall was devastated by a tragic fire in the early hours of Tuesday 25th May 2004 during which the original clock was destroyed. This bell hung in the clock tower and faithfully announced the time for many years. The damage caused when the bell fell from its cross beam during the fire can be seen. It has been placed inside the Market Hall, following its refurbishment in 2008, as a stark reminder of this devastating event. (Adapted from an information board nearby).
