Nos.17-19 Empringham Street was built 1888, probably commissioned by a shipping company and used for its offices. In 1899 the building was purchased by Thomas Kenny and converted to a lodging house for Irish navvies employed to construct the local dock yards. Since 2007, Compass House has been used for office accommodation and services for local businesses.
