The end of the modern, wooden Chester-bound platform, at the north-western end of the station, gives way to the longer, more substantial disused brick platform, from when the station had four railway tracks running through. Modernity may be more efficient, but it isn't always an improvement. I expect that the brick platform will, also, still be there, long after the wooden one has succumbed to the elements.
