Witch's brooms

Prominent in winter on two adjacent trees in the Shire Hall grounds on Castle Hill. Witch's broom is a deformity where a dense mass of shoots grows from a single point, with the resulting structure resembling a broom or a bird's nest. It may be caused by pathogens or parasites such as fungi, insects or viruses.
