'Pont' is Welsh for bridge. This probably isn't the one which gave the village its name as there is another, presumably older, bridge carrying the road over the Afon Carno. This one carries the railway over the A470. The OS maps spell the village name differently between versions: 50,000 series - Pontdolgoch; 25,000 series: Pont Dol-goch.
