The earliest part of the house was built in 1739 by Robert Crosland II, a cardmaker. The family had moved into a house nearby in 1697, and bought the property in 1735 from Joshua Waddington, a farmer. The 'Old Field' was one of the open fields of medieval Scholes. The Crosland family played an important part in the activities of Quakerism in the area, and many travelling ministers are thought to have stayed in the house. The house has stone mullion windows of up to seven lights, and later ones with transoms. This photograph was taken from the footpath to the south of the house.
