Large numbers of traditional signal boxes are scheduled for closure over the next few years. This one at Hensall is one of a number targeted by English Heritage for listing as special representatives of various types and builds of box. It was built in 1872 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and is the only remaining example of the type 1 box built by the Manchester firm Yardley Smith, mainly for the L&YR. The box has not surprisingly been modernised over the years, with for example modern windows and a 'new' lever frame installed in the 1960s, but retains its original outline to a large extent. Listed Grade II, in April 2013.
