This amazing survivor was built to house stationary steam pumping engines to create a vacuum for the South Devon Railway, a broad gauge line intended to be an atmospheric railway and opened in 1848. However, it was never operated as such and the redundant pumping station was for a time a pottery and now houses businesses including a fruit and vegetable merchant. The taller building to the left was obviously the engine house with the boiler house and chimney to the right. The building is listed II*. There are also surviving pumping stations at Starcross and Totnes.
