The UK's first drop lock allows boats to pass under Dumbarton Road at Dalmuir, without disrupting traffic, by temporarily lowering the water level beneath the road to give sufficient headroom. When a boat has entered the lock chamber, 2000 cubic metres of water are pumped out to increase the air draft to 3 metres. The process takes around 40 minutes. The lock is manned by British Waterways staff.
