Another of the planned straight streets Image of central Belfast, Alfred Street seems to have been started in the early 19th century although by 1852 it still had only nine buildings. In later years the street saw further development as it became associated with the linen trade. Some of the original linen buildings have been demolished and replaced by modern apartments. The 1877 street directory describes it as running from May Street to the (now culverted) Blackstaff River http://www.geograph.org.uk/snippet/5329. This view is from Ormeau Avenue towards May Street.
