A Metropolitan Railway electric locomotive at Rickmansworth Station

Taken in May 1995, this photo shows No 12 (Sarah Siddons) at Rickmansworth Station at a special Metropolitan Railway steam train event. This electric locomotive was one of twenty built in 1906/7 by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co., but were rebuilt by Metropolitan Vickers in 1922-3 for higher performance. Each locomotive was named after an individual who had connections with the area that the Metropolitan Railway served. These locomotives saw service between London (Aldgate) and Rickmansworth, but were withdrawn in 1961 when the Metropolitan Line was extended from Rickmansworth to Amersham with new A60 rolling stock being introduced into service at that time.
