This impressive tree is a landmark in this residential area. There is a house called Monterey in Elmonte Close, a private road. Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata D.Don) was introduced from California in 1833. It has done particularly well in southwest England and in Ireland. It's a 'three-needled' pine, that is, the needles are joined at the base in bunches of three, "densely-set, bright green, slender, straight, turning orange-brown before falling". The cones are large, squat and markedly asymmetrical at the base. They may be retained on the branches and trunk for many years.
