I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this. It looks as if the Bath stone has been eaten away or bleached from the walls into the windows. Metal poles protrude through the wall - are they keeping the structure up? Through all this, the stateliness of this pair at the square's north-west corner are still evident. It was laid out, with the surrounding streets, by the architect Daniel Hague from c1787 (though not completed until c1823). Grade I listed.
