The Clock House, a Grade II-listed mid-C19th two-storey house, is seen over this ivy-covered wall. Empingham Road (the A606) passes its southerly end elevation, whilst the Old Great North Road or Casterton Road, as it known locally, disappears behind it. The front gate opens onto Scotgate, a reminder that this was once a principal route between Scotland and more southerly parts of England. The photograph was taken from a halfway up the first of two sections of very wide steps leading up to a residential street known as "Eight Acres". This is a short road encroaching on former open fields that was named after the acreage of one particular adjoining field. Houses of a less grand type than those in this picture were soon built along one side of Eight Acres during the early C19th.
