Detail from a stained glass window of 1929 (in memory of Anne Lowe) in the upper chantry chapel of St Alphege, within St Alphege's Parish Church. Alphege (then Bishop of Winchester) is shown as broker of peace between the King of Denmark and Norway (Olaf Tryggvason) and the King of England (Ethelred the Unready) following the Viking raids of 994. He later became Archbishop of Canterbury and was martyred at Greenwich in 1012 following a later Danish invasion.
