Austin Friars’ Lane crosses the River Welland here. To the right, the road climbs to meet the junction of Austin Street and to the left, beyond this residential complex, the road peters out at the commencement of a rural footpath known as Melancholy Walk. The Austin friars were monks who occupied a neighbouring Augustinian Friary between 1342-1538. The residential properties on the left are known as Freeman's Cottage. According to an externally mounted panel they were built in 1838. They were they were gutted and altered - internally and externally - recently.
