Originally named the Whitmore Arms, presumably after the powerful local family of that name, who lived at nearby Apley Park and supplied many of Bridgnorth's Members of Parliament in times past. In 1867 Apley Park was sold to William Orme Foster, an ironmaster. His son William Henry Foster became the local Member of Parliament in 1870 and held the seat until it was abolished in 1885. The change of ownership of Apley Park and of M.P. no doubt prompted the pub to change its name. Image
