The Hillsborough Hotel is a 'real ale' pub with the advantage of having its own Wood Street Brewery on the premises … no running out of Beer here then! It was called The Wellington Inn c1849 and indeed this name is 'written in stone' above the double doors fronting onto Langsett Road. It gets its nickname of the 'Top Wellie' as there is another Wellington Inn pub about 2 miles away which is known as the 'Bottom Wellie' … see … Image There is a view that it was called the 'Hero and His Horse' in the early 1840s, after the painting of the same name by R B Haydon. This painting shows the horse as belonging to the Duke of Wellington.
